born on Hurley Street in the north part of Sedalia, daughter of William F. Wehmeyer and Martha Francis (Sebree) Wehmeyer. Her siblings are:

As a child, her family moved to a farm on highway 52, east of Cole Camp, Missouri.

She married Clarence Ficken (1911-1988) on August 22, 1932. Three children were born to them:

Sandra Sue Ficken Smith (1943- )

She had two grandchildren:

They lived their working years in the Independence/Kansas City, Missouri area. Bernice worked at the Lake City arcenal plant during the Second World War. She later worked at Doctor's Hospital as a dietician. The Fickens were founding members of Calvary Presbyterian Church on Blue Ridge Boulevard in Kansas City. They returned to Sedalia to retire in 1972 and lived on a 20 acre farm south of Sedalia. They joined the New Bethel United Methodist Church, located on highway 65, around the corner from their farm.
