George J. Poepperling, 93 of Devils Lake, ND died on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake, ND.
George John, was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA on July 22, 1920. George attended Saint Nicholas School in Wilkes-Barre from first grade through twelfth grade, graduating from St. Nicholas Parochial School.
He was united in marriage to Virginia Esser on August 3, 1946 in Wilkes-Barre where they lived, worked and raised their family. George worked in the furniture industry for many years and after retiring in 1982 he worked at the Dallas Middle School in Pennsylvania on a part-time basis. In 2004, George and Virginia moved to Devils Lake to be close to their daughter and her family. Virginia died on April 10, 2011.
George was a member of the Army Air Corp during World War II, and proudly served his country. During his life in Pennsylvania, he was a member of various organizations including St. Conrad's Church, Knights of St. George and the American Legion.
George had a passion about his yard and loved mowing his lawn. He felt blessed to have so many years close to family and never missed an opportunity to join his comrades for good times, good conversation and sharing memories of the past.
George is survived by his daughter, Donna and her husband Ronald Wren of Devils Lake and his son Gerard Poepperling and his wife, Charlotte of Buhler, KS; grandchildren Ronald (Kris) Wren, Redfield, SD, Tracy (Angela) Wren, St. Michael, ND, James Wren, Devils Lake; Michael (McKayla) Poepperling, Hutchinson, KS, David (Kara) Poepperling, Tulsa, OK and Michelle (Mike) Cosentine, Moriarty, New Mexico; fifteen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; brother, Paul Poepperling, Wilkes-Barre, PA; sister, Margaret Burrel, Harvey's Lake, PA; several nieces, nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; brother, Bill and sister, Irene.
A Memorial Service for George will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the VFW Club, Devils Lake beginning at 10:00 a.m. with a graveside service at 10:45 am, Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Devils Lake with Most Reverend C.F. Wilhelm officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.
