Beloved daughter, sister, mother, aunt and friend. Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the younger of two children.
Immigrated with family to New York City at age 15, settling in the South Bronx, then a bustling enclave for Italians and Jews. Attended Jane Addams High School, but quit after a fellow classmate was raped in the school building. She then chose to work to help support the family.
At age 20, became engaged to teenage sweetheart Berto Gonzalez, but engagement ended several months later. Married Ecuadorean native Hector Chavez in 1968. The couple separated a year later while she was pregnant with their only son, Hector Francisco. Resolved to raise her son on her own and with her parents. Earned her GED years later, and graduated in 1977 from SCS Technical Institute with a certificate in Electronics. Honored as valedictorian and sole female student of her class.
Employed for a N.J. fastener company in various capacities for 27 years. Suffered a back injury on-site in 1993, rendering her disabled and eligible for early retirement. Maintained close relationship with family and friends during the last years of her life, her proudest achievement having watched her only child grow and become an attorney in 1999.
After brief complications from renal failure, Ivette passed away at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital on Sunday, July 15, 2001. She will be remembered fondly for her timeless sense of humor and her unyielding love for everyone blessed to know her. The Chavez and Van Brackle families will cherish her memory ... always.
