"HARRISON MILLS 27 DEC 1892

Harrison Mills, Sheriff of Orange County, from 1883 to 1886, died at his home in this village Saturday morning, age 76 years. The illness which resulted in the death of Mr. Mills was of about ten days duration, but it was only within the last few days that his condition was regarded as dangerous. His end came peacefully and quietly at 7 o'clock Saturday morning.
Mr. Mills was born in the town of Wallkill, near Bullville, and was the son of Denton Mills. When a young man he located on a farm in the town of Crawford where he resided until elected Sheriff in 1883. His wife died in June, 1886. He is survived by five sons, Victor K., of Eustis, Fla.; George H., of Goshen; Lewis R., of Little Rock, Ark.; Charles H., of San Francisco, Cal,; James H., of Ogden, Utah, and by one daughter, Emma F., wife of Fred Smith, of Goshen. He is also survived by a brother, Nathan J., of Circleville; a half-brother, James M. Mills, of Middletown, and by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann White, of the town of Wallkill, and Mrs. Ira H. Coleman of Albany.
Few men were more widely known and none more highly esteemed than Harrison Mills, whose genial manners, kindliness and good nature were proverbial, and who had a pleasant word and kindly greeting for all. The extent of his popularity was strikingly manifested by his eletion as Sheriff by a large majority in this Republican county. Through his ownership of Hambletonian's great son Sweepstakes, and his interest in matters that tended to encourage the breeding of good stock he became widely know among horsemen all over the country.
Notwithstanding his advanced age he had withstood the ravages of time in a remarkable degree and was remarkably hale and vigorous man up to the time of his last sickness."
