FROM THE IOLA REGISTER-MONDAY, JANUARY 5, 1970

Lewis A. Howland, 73, Route 1, Iola, died yesterday at the Allen County Hospital. Mr. Howland had entered the hospital early yesterday morning after becoming ill at his home.

He was born at Geneva, KS on May 27, 1896. He moved to Newton as a child and lived there for a short period before returning to the Iola area where he had lived on a farm which had been in his mother's family for many years.

He was married to Miss Florence Rivers December 17, 1922, in Iola and they operated the farm to the present time.

Survivors include his widow of the home; three sons, Lewis R. Howland, Marietta, GA, Paul W. Howland, Derby, KS, and John R. Howland, Blue Springs, MO; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Jones, Carthage, MO and Mrs. Jean Troxel, Kansas City, MO; a half sister, Mrs. Evalyn Mortensen, San Francisco, CA; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Mary Emily Howland, died in infancy.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. at the Friskel-Kinser Chapel. The Rev. W.J. Deckinger will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
