I first came across this story in Life magazine almost 10 years ago, in 1998, and was inspired to create a memorial. In the wake of the Amy Grossberg/Melissa Drexler stories, among other cases of abandoned (and often killed) infants, Life magazine in their January 1998 issue ran a photo essay on the plight of abandoned babies. The reporters described the plight of 7 such infants who were found in New York City, Los Angeles, Virginia and other Southern California suburbs. They were found on city streets, in sewage plants, in trash receptacles outside college dormitories, between February and June 1997. Five of these infants were girls, and the gender of the remaining two were not indicated in this article. Although I created existing memorials for two of these infants (Angelica Evergreen and baby girl Chu, whose stories I remember very well), I thought that this memorial would be a fitting tribute to all of them, in that their brief lives may not be forgotten.
