"Ray George Smith (1919-2007) Obituary
Ray George Smith passed away peacefully Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007. He was born Nov. 21, 1919 to George Stephen Smith and Hazel Hedwig Kunz in Bern, Idaho. He married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Howell, on Sept. 13, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Dad and Mom began their lives together in Salt Lake City. He worked as a mailman, took time off to serve his country during WWII in the Army Air Corp. In 1955, his name was drawn to develop a homestead in southeastern Idaho. It was a hard decision, but Mom and Dad decided to move the family there "to try new and challenging experiences." Dad had to work hard to provide for our family of nine children. His jet-black hair soon turned to silver which was "the result of the many and varied experiences I have had but mainly the result of being the father of eight daughters and one son." Even though his dual role as a farmer and rural mail carrier kept him busy, he accepted the call to serve as bishop of the Acequia 2nd Ward.
After his release he became scoutmaster, a love which defined his legacy. Today over a hundred boys from that troop have earned the Eagle Award, to our knowledge more than any other in scouting history. He and his wife, Margaret, were awarded one of scouting's highest honors, the Silver Beaver. His example and leadership continues to bless the lives of those he served. Dad and Mom left their Idaho farm in 1984 to serve as LDS missionaries in the Little Rock, Arkansas Mission. After returning, they made their home in Provo, Utah where they served for thirteen years as temple workers.
Dad is survived by his wife, Margaret; children Linda Druce, Susan Conner, Karen Smith, Delores (Dan) Pedersen, Melvin (Lynda) Smith, Marilee (Steven) Bales, Merlyn (Kevin) Schofield, Arlette (Bill) McCausland and Melanie (Terry) Lindsay, twenty-four beloved grandchildren and forty-seven great-grandchildren. We will dearly miss our great-grandpa, grandpa and dad!
A viewing for family and friends will be held on his birthday, Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sundberg Olpin Mortuary in Orem with family gathering at 11:00. Burial and graveside services will take place at 1:30 at the Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 East 4530 South in Salt Lake City, Utah. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the LDS church missionary fund or Primary Children's Hospital."
