A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, he served from 1942 to 1946.

Following his honorable discharge, Swede took a sales territory for the former Inter-Collegiate Press, where he was a sales representative for over 40 years.

In addition to his parents, Swede was preceded in death by his wife, Vaunda Walker Tilberg in 1992, and by a sister, Carolyn Tilberg of Topeka, Kan.
