Gladys V. "Mama Gladys" Caldwell Klepfer, age 95, of Benton; passed away Wednesday March 19, 2008. She was born October 1, 1912, in Bearden, Arkansas, as the 7th child of Willie Benjamin and Jennie Aud Vaughan. Mrs. Klepfer was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church where she served as piano player, Sunday school teacher, deacon's wife and other important positions. She owned and operated Ridgecrest Grocery in Benton for several years. In 1975, she moved to Longview, Texas, where she became a licensed real estate agent and worked at her daughter's real estate agency for a short time. Mrs. Klepfer went back to school in her 70's and attended Kilgore Jr. College. She took Creative Writing and Psychology, earning "A's" in both courses. Mrs. Klepfer was published in a Christian Magazine "Mature Living" in 1991. She worked with the Literary Council helping young Mexican children learn to read and worked for Pine Tree School as a volunteer. Mrs. Klepfer was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Jesse Caldwell; second husband, Walter Klepfer; son, Harry G. Caldwell and a step-daughter, Rosene Hegna.
She is survived by her children, Nita Clark of Tennessee, Jean C. Moore (Jim) of Benton, June Caldwell Maner of Benton, Joyce C. Flanagan (Major) of Texas, Raymond Caldwell (Anna) of Texas, Joe Caldwell (Julie) of Alexander, Kay C. Procop (Don) of Benton, Don Klepfer (Gwen) of Texas, Dean Klepfer (Wanda) of Texas, Tom Klepfer (Rose) of Texas, Gladys Tisdale of Arizona and Mary Stephens (Tommy) of Texas; sister, Christine Cook of Cabot; forty-five grandchildren; eighty-nine great-grandchildren and thirty-two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday March 22, 2008, at Ashby Funeral Home with burial at New Rosemont Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to "The American Institute for Cancer Research" at 1759 R. Street NW, PO Box 97167 Washington, DC 20090-7167.
