Father Bourdow became a close friend of the family while pastor of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Reed City, Michigan.

Father was a US Navy Chaplain during World War II.

He organized the building of the St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Shrine in Manistee, Michigan, and was the pastor there for many years.

"The Rev. Anthony D. Bourdow was known for helping others.

When he died Wednesday, at age 86, friends in the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, where he spent much of his 18 years in retirement, volunteering his services to local parishes, remembered him for his thoughtfulness.

In Manistee, where he was pastor of St. Mary's of Mount Carmel for 22 years, friends remember him for building what has become a nationally known shrine to the Blessed Mother.

The distinctiveness of that building, constructed some 25 years ago in the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids, is credited with the survival of the parish.

In the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, Bourdow, a Kochville Township native, was well-known and well-liked, said the Rev. Edward J. Konieczka, pastor of St. Josaphat, 459 Shattuck.

"He was a kind person, thoughtful, and very considerate. He was always willing to do whatever he could to help."

The Rev. Edward A. Roczen, pastor of St. Mary's of Mount Carmel in Manistee, said of Bourdow; "He built something memorable and outstanding."

Roczen said visitors from across the country visit the shrine, which resembles a pagoda, the roof dipping up and down like the sand dunes along Lake Michigan.

"He tried to build the church in an exotic way, giving it a special touch. That's what finally made it famous."

In this Marian Year, proclaimed by Pope John II reminding Catholics of their devotion to Mary, St. Mary's of Mount Carmel (which is now a part of the Catholic Diocese of Gaylord) has been designated as the church where Catholics may make a special pilgrimage to gain spiritual favors.

Rev. Fr. Anthony C. Bourdow passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 27, 1988, at St. Mary's Medical Center, after a brief illness. Age 86 years. He was born Nov. 22, 1901 in Saginaw.
