A member of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, he participated in the jumps during the Normandy Invasion, Operation: Market Garden, and served during the Battle of the Bulge.
He was wounded several times during the war, earning him a total of four Purple Hearts, and a Bronze Star.
He was wounded in Holland, and also in Bastogne, he earned his last two Purple Hearts there, it was also at Bastogne where he lost his right leg, January 3, 1945.
One of his friends, William "Wild Bill" Guarnere lost a leg trying to drag him to safety after he had been hit.
This scene is portrayed in the hit HBO mini-series Band of Brothers, in the episode "The Breaking Point."
Guarnere is quoted to have said that Joe told him, "Jesus Christ! What does a guy have to do to get killed around here?!"
He spent nine months in hospitals, finally getting discharged from the Army hospital in Atlantic City, NJ. He was portrayed by Kirk Acevedo in the HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers."
At his funeral, his former Company Commander, Major Richard Winters, delivered the eulogy.
According to his son, Pete Toye, his headstone simply bears the following.
