Sergeant Edward Dowd received his appointment on 02/26/1874 and started his career with the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

Sergeant Dowd was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on 04/01/1895, when he was 29 years of age.

Sergeant Dowd died of kidney and liver disease disease at his residence of 2031 Eugenia Avenue.

At the time of his death he was the 7Th oldest police officer in years of service on the force. Sergeant Dowd celebrated his 40Th year mark on the force on 02/26/1914. He had been in declining health in recent months.

Sergeant Dowd was the 1St generation in the family to serve on the police force and this commitment of his would be followed by many generations to come. His 2 sons, Harry and Edward P. Dowd are also on the department serving in special assignments out of headquarters building located at 1200 Clark Avenue.

Due to the length of time since his passing, all of the Sergeant's assignment history is not known. It is known that he served in the 3Rd District, 7Th District, and the Mounted Police Unit. He was known through out the city as a "No Nonsense" type of police officer. There is no longer any department photograph on file of this Officer.



In addition to his sons, he is survived by his wife Mary J. (nee O'Leary) Dowd, and four daughters Florence, Virginia, Nellie, and Adeline,

The wake for Officer Dowd was held at his home on Eugenia Avenue. Arrangements were under the direction of the Harrigan-Sheehan Livery & Undertaking Company located at 2618 Morgan Street.

Burial was held at Calvary Cemetery on 12/19/1914.

Officer Dowd was the son of Edward and Mary (nee Hennessy) Dowd.
