State Trooper Stephen R. Gyurke of Somerset, Pennsylvania joined the Pennsylvania State Police as a student recruit on October 4, 1954. He completed training at Hershey Training School on March 31, 1955, was promoted to private and assigned to Troop E-1, Erie. He transferred to Troop B-2 (Turnpike Division) on December 1, 1955. Trooper Gyurke had served with the Pennsylvania State Police nearly four years. He was in the process of building a new home along with his wife. His brother, William Gyurke was serving at the Uniontown state police barracks. Another brother, Michael Jr., was killed In France during World War II. Trooper Gyurke was injured in a Pennsylvania Turnpike accident and died at age 29 in Frick Memorial Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. Trooper Gyurke had stopped a rig and was talking to the driver when a second tractor trailer hit the rear of the first rig.
