My uncle has been researching our family, and just visited Pikeville Cemetery, only to discover a statue of my great great aunt, Octavia Smith-Hatcher. We put her name into Google and were amazed to discover that there is a legend attached to her death. The legend goes that she was accidentally buried alive and her ghost is said to haunt the cemetery to this day. You can read her legend here: http://www.prairieghosts.com/octavia.html
There's also a great debunking here:
But legends are fun, right? And it's neat that she's "famous."
I am told her birth place was Mouth of Pond Creek in Pike County, but there's no option for that town here on Find A Grave.
I hope Great Great Aunt Octavia rests in peace, and I look forward to learning more about our family.
