Donald Andrew Hines, 98, of Lizton, died Monday, May 20, 2007, under VNS hospice care at Hendricks County Regional Hospital.
He was born Christmas Eve, 1908, to Ora and Dora Hines on their farm between Jamestown and Lizton.
He attended the old one-room, brick Hendricks School on the Hendricks/Boone County line. He was recently honored on the 80th anniversary of his graduation from North Salem High School, Class of 1927. He was the oldest living graduate of General Motors Institute, now Kettering University, Class of 1929. He was a member of Hendricks Co. Farm Bureau, Hazelrigg Masonic Lodge, Jamestown Christian Church and Old Union Church. He worked for Buick Motor Company and was involved in developing Buick's first race car for the Indy 500, working as a riding mechanic at the Speedway Brickyard in the 1930s. He owned his own farm and automotive repair business for many years.
He and his wife Lucile loved to travel. Following a tragic airplane crash, he was told he would never walk again, but he and Lucile walked a section of the Great Wall of China, walked extensively touring farms in Japan and France, exploring the USSR, Mexico, Switzerland, and helping to build an orphanage in Haiti with a group from the Jamestown Christian Church. He camped through the Yukon and Alaska with his grandson David twice. His travels included a memorable visit to the Holy Land where he walked through Jerusalem, exploring sections off the beaten path.
