John Howard was the son of Abraham and Elizabeth Hewlett Howard. He was born January 3, 1837 in Union City, Erie County, Pennsylvania. He followed his father in his occupation as a shoemaker. He married Ellen King October 12, 1855 in Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan. They had two children: Claude Howard and Elizabeth Howard. He married Carmelia Parrott and had three children: Ida May Howard, Minerva Howard and Audie Howard
. John enlisted at age 25 in Co K 3rd Cav. on September 2, 1862 in Jackson, Michigan and discharged for disablity at Jackson, Tennessee on April 23, 1863. He reenlisted in the Navy in Setember 4, 1864 as Lansman on the USS Fort Hindman at Lowell, Kent County, Michigan and was discharged at Mound City, Illinois on August 5, 1865.
"In the fall of 1862 while at or near Corinth, Mississippi from poor diet and exposure I began to suffer with dropsy of the abdomen called by the doctors "acities": I was all bloated up and felt dull, irritable and nervous. In December was sent to hospital at Hawley Springs Miss, was there a few days and was then removed to Hospital #1 Ward :F: at Jackson, Tenn where I remained until discharged there from on surgeon's certificate of disability April 20/63. I have suffered continuously with said dropsy of abdomen and resulting troubles from time of occurrence thereof to present time with increasing severity and to such an extent that I have been fully one half disabled for ordinary manual labor by said disability and I claim pension therefor. On Sept 3, 1864 I enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Chicago, Ill. as Landsman on Board U.S. Ship "Fort Hindman" and was discharged at Mound City, Ill. Aug 5, 1865. and I have not been employed or paid in the U.S. Military or naval service since that date. Since discharge my residence has been Lowell, Kent County, Michigan till fall of 1888. During my service in the Navy I was troubled with said dropsy of abdomen and was badly bloated. Residence listed as 447 East Bridge Street in city of Grand Rapids, Kent, MI and PO address is No 447 East Bridge St. Grand Rapids, MI. Signed John Howard." He was admitted to the Michigan Soldier's Home in Grand Rapids, Michigan on October 10, 1900, at the age of 65. He died October 3, 1919.
