The Adams County coroner has released the identity of a woman killed Sunday in a one-vehicle crash after the SUV's rear wheel came off.
Leslie Cook reported that Ronda L. Cowans, 49, of Decatur died of multiple blunt force trauma in the crash, according to a news release from the Indiana State Police.
Cowans was reportedly a front-seat passenger in an SUV and not wearing a seatbelt when she was ejected from the vehicle when it crashed at around 4 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation conducted by Master Trooper Kurt Jack indicated that the 1998 Ford Expedition, driven by 47-year-old Tyler Cowans of Decatur, was traveling southbound on US 27, south of County Road 850 N when the left rear wheel assembly came off of the vehicle, causing Tyler Cowans to lose control. The Expedition traveled off the road and into the west-side ditch where the SUV began to roll. Cowans, who was not seatbelted, suffered head and internal injuries and was taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, according to a report. His condition is not known at this time.
Three other passengers in the vehicle were also injured and taken to Lutheran Hospital: Mariah Cowans, 19, of Decatur with internal injuries; Rick Stults, 18, of Geneva with internal injuries and Jaiden Cowans, 1, with internal injuries. The conditions of these three are not known.
The Adams County Sheriff Department and the Decatur Police and Fire departments assisted with the crash, and the crash's cause remains under investigation
