Max, a resident of Albuquerque, was predeceased by his sons Robert and Juan D. Casaus.

Max led a life filled with love and happiness with his wife and family after returning from WWII. He was with H Battery of the 200th Coast Artillery (AA) in the Phillipines on what was supposed to be a year-long anti-aircraft training exercise. After he was surrendered he became a POW and survived the Bataan Death March. Max was interned at the Hirohata prison camp in Japan and slave labored for Seitetsu Steel (aka Nippon Steel) in all areas supporting the steel mill: unloading cargo and ore ships, in the machine shops and blast furnaces, clearing slag, and as a stevedore on the docks. He was liberated in September 1945. Many testimonies recount the harsh and brutal treatment suffered by prisoners of war at Hirohata. In March, 2010; he and his wife were portrayed in the documentary play, "Sacred Mistakes (The Bataan Project)" which premiered at the Greer Garson Theatre, College of Santa Fe. Max was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 99, VFW 401, Purple Heart, and the German-American Club.

A Rosary and Catholic Prayer Service were recited June 15, at French-Lomas Chapel. A reception followed the services at Edelweiss German-American Club, 4821 Menaul Blvd. NE. Interment was at Santa Fe National Cemetery on June 17, 2011 with full military honors .
