Firemen from New Castle, Richmond, Yorktown, Warsaw, Kokomo, Anderson and Marion have volunteered their services to man the Muncie Fire Department on Friday when funeral services will be conducted for three firemen who were killed while fighting flames that destroyed the Schwartz Paper Company buildings Wednesday.
Fire Chief DeCrastos said three Muncie firemen would remain on duty at their respective stations and other positions would be filled by the volunteers.
DeCrastos said Yorktown would send six men and Warsaw and Kokomo offered the services of 12.
Dr. Arthur W. McDavitt, unofficial chaplain of the fire department, will officiate at each funeral service. The dead firemen are Capt. Clarence (Pete) White, Fireman Vernon Lutton, and Fireman Doyle Upchurch.
Rites for Lutton will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at the Parson Mortuary. The Rev. Dewey Hole, will assist Dr. McDavitt and burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary after 2 p.m. Thursday.
Mr. Lutton served overseas 28 months with the Army during 35 months of duty in World War II. He was a member of Delawre Lodge 46, F. and A.M., Hartford City Moose Lodge and Indiana Firemen's Association. He was appointed to the fire department in 1951.
He is survived by his widow, Verna; his mother, Mrs. Gladys Lutton; five brothers, Raymond, Robert, William, Donald and James; and two sisters, Alice Jo Ann and Sue.
