He was the son of Robert Edwin and Matilida Green Thompson and was born in Franklin County (now Colbert) Alabama. In 1850, he was listed with his parents and siblings in Franklin county on the census. He first married Susan (last name unknown) about 1859 and they had one child, Susan L. Thompson who was born in June 1860. His wife, Susan, apparently died before 1862, the date he married Francis E. Landers.
In November, 1863 he enlisted at Moulton, AL into the Alabama Calvary. He served as Private in Co. D., 11th AL Calvary Regiment. He was paroled at Pond Springs, AL in May, 1865
William & Francis had 7 children: Douglas Stephen, Matilda S., Callia, Sarah "Sallie", Doctor B., Isom N., and Mary Frances.
In 1895 he was elected as a Colbert County Commissioner.
His wife, Francis, died in 1910 and William later married a widow named Effie Parker.
