UPDATE: Tuesday February 5, 2013
A Harborcreek Township man pleaded guilty Monday in Erie County Court to charges that he recklessly shot to death his best friend in September.

John S. Schlick, 19, entered a guilty plea to one first-degree misdemeanor count of involuntary manslaughter and one second-degree misdemeanor count of recklessly endangering another person in a plea agreement that dropped a first-degree felony charge of aggravated assault.

With the plea, Schlick admitted he acted with recklessness or gross negligence when he shot Marshall D. Curl, 19, in the chest on Sept. 18 in Schlick's home at 5521 East Lake Road.
Schlick told state police Trooper Susan Edelmann during an interview that he loaded the handgun with a magazine containing 9 mm ammunition, stood directly in front of Curl and held the gun a few inches from Curl's chest when the gun fired, according to the affidavit of probable cause filed with the criminal charges.

Schlick faces a maximum possible sentence of seven years in prison and $15,000 fine when he is sentenced March 21 by Judge Shad Connelly.
