Sapper, 5e Régiment de genie de combat
(5 Combat Engineer Regiment) based at CFB Valcartier near Québec City. Aged 21. He was deployed with the 2e Batallion, Royal 22e Régiment Battle Group of the Canadian contingent of NATO forces serving in Afghanistan.
He and Cpl Christian Bobbitt were killed when their resupply convoy was struck by two improvised explosive devices in the Zhari district, approximately 15 kilometres west of Kandahar City. They had come out of their vehicle to secure the area after the first explosion, when another bomb exploded. Another soldier was seriously wounded but was in stable condition in hospital.
Spr Allard was described as a shy young man who never hesitated to serve and was a hard-working team leader. He enlisted in the military in March 2007. He is survived by his parents, René Allard and Christine Jobidon, two younger brothers, Pierre and Yves, grandmother Jeannine Rivard Allard, girlfriend Véronique Béchard, and other family members.
Recipient of Sacrifice Medal (posthumous).
Funeral service, with full military honours, was held on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at l'église Saint-Edmond de Vassan in Val d'Or.
The deaths bring to 127 the number of Canadian military personnel who have died on the Afghan mission since it began in 2002. One diplomat and two aid workers have also died.
