Gunner, 5e Régiment d'Artillerie légère du Canada, based in Valcartier, Québec. Aged 27, he was born in Val d'Or, QC and lived most of his life in Gatineau. He deployed in July to serve with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
He was killed and four other soldiers injured when their armoured vehicle hit a roadside bomb approximately 20 km west of Kandahar City in the Zhari District. They were travelling after a routine patrol from a forward operating base to Kandahar Air Field base for New Year's celebrations, their first break after months at the outpost.
Gunner Dion joined the military in January 2005 and was on his first overseas deployment. He is remembered as a warm and friendly soldier who was respected for his dedication and hard work. He is survived by his mother Lise Marcil and stepfather Raymond Pelletier, sister Guylaine, stepbrothers Benoît and Marc-André, grandmother Lucille Charbonneau, and extended family.
Seventy-four soldiers and one diplomat have now died since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002.
Funeral service with military honours held on January 12, 2008 at l'église Jean XXIII in Gatineau, QC.
