Private with 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Manitoba. Aged 22, he was born and raised in Espanola, ON. He was deployed with the the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He was one of four soldiers killed, and several injured, when a man travelling on a bicycle detonated his bomb near Canadian troops on foot patrol in the Panjwayi district, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. A number of civilians, including children, were also injured in the attack.

Pte Byers is survived by his parents John and Jane Byers, brothers Nathan and Alan Byers, and fiancée Chantal Roy.

Recipient of Sacrifice Medal (posthumous).

Repatriation ceremony at CFB Trenton on Sept 23, 2006. Funeral service held Sept 29, 2006. Cremation/interment of ashes in the Espanola Cemetery.
