This Plaque is only a cenotaph. His remains were buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Leonard's birth record shows his name as Joseph Leonard Alphonse Gionet. During World War II, he served as a Radio Operator aboard the "Naughty but Nice", a B-17E Bomber tail number 41-2430. 43 Bomb Group AAF. His plane was shot down on 26 June 1943 over Papua, New Guinea in the South Pacific. There were 10 men on board. Only one man survived by parachuting out. The other 9 went down with the plane including Leonard. He was listed as MIA and finally declared dead on 3 December 1943. The bodies of 5 crew members were found in the 1940's and identified in the 1980's. After many trips to Papua, New Guinea by U.S. military and other U.S. Government teams and three trips by the sole surviving crew member, Leonard and his remaining crew members were finally discovered in 2010. All eight crew members will be buried together with the highest military honors.

Leonard was awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Purple Heart all with Oak Leaf Clusters. In a ceremony in Butte Montana on 6 January 1944, his wife Della (Burke) Gionet accepted the medals which were pinned to the chest of his one year old son, Leonard Allan Gionet.

His remains were buried in Arlington National Cemetery with the other 8 members of the crew of the "Naughty but Nice" on September 21, 2011. Leonard also has a cenotaph veteran's stone in the St Anthony Cemetery in Shirley, Middlesex County. Massachusetts
