GROVE CITY, Ohio - James E. "Jim" Ewart, age 72, one of the sport's best known racing secretaries, passed away February 14, 2012, in Grove City, Ohio, following his battle with cancer. Jim, a native of Greenup, IL, came from a harness racing family. He worked at 18 tracks in 9 states and in New Zealand and Australia and most notably for Scioto Downs for 26 years. Jim graduated from Cumberland High School where he still holds several basketball records, and then graduated from the University of Illinois where he lettered in basketball. He was a US Army Veteran. Jim is survived by his loving wife Sandy Ewart; daughters Stephanie (Mike) Frazier and Michele Ewart; step children Nikki (Jim) Edwards, Lisa Dodrill and Stephanie (Tim) Tweed; grandchildren Nicholas Frazier, Amber Williams, Whitney Smith, Lindsay Dodrill, Matt Dodrill, Kyle Tweed and Nathan Tweed; and great grandson Ben (L.B.) Williams; brother Howard (Nina) Ewart; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. A visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:00 PM until time of memorial service at 3:00 PM at Barkley Funeral Home 300 North Kentucky St. Greenup, IL 62428. An additional visitation will be held Saturday, March 17, 2012 from 1:00PM until time of memorial service at 3:00 PM at THE SPENCE-MILLER FUNERAL HOME 2697 Columbus St. Grove City. Inurnment will take place at Greenup Cemetery.
