brother Harry Ashley Ewart
Everett Carl Ewart
Everette inherited the Helena Broom and Mop Company from his father and operated the business until he was 90. He
was also active in the Lions Club and used his business to help his local club in their fund raising drives as long as he
was able to use the phone, even attempting to do so from his nursing home bed. He was thought to have been the
oldest active Lion club member in the state of Arkansas when he was in his nineties. A mild stroke and his increasing
inability to care for himself had caused him to move into the nursing home. He eventually died of heart failure.
!Everette loved the Mississippi River and longed to work on a paddle wheeler. While he was working as a grocery store
clerk as a young man, he learned one afternoon that a boat that was at the dock in Helena was in need of a clerk. He
got the job and then ran home and got his brother, Harry, to come take over his clerking job at the grocery store so
that he could leave immediately. His days on the Jim Lee river boat were written up in the Helena Historical Society
quarterly. I have a photo of his with the other crew members on the deck of the Jim Lee.
!Everette was very devoted to his family and worked hard traveling the state of Arkansas and later into Texas to make
a living to support them. He had left school early so that he could contribute money to his family's income so that his
sisters could attend school. One became a bank vice-president and another a teacher.
!In 1917 he registered for the World War I draft states that he was born 31 Jul 1888 in Greenup, Cumberland Co. IL.
He was a shipping clerk for Helena Wholesale Foods with a wife and one child. His signature is on the card, one I
recognize from having seen his handwriting on many occasions. He was described as of medium height, with brown
eyes, and his hair color appears to say blond, but it is certainly not clear, actually looks more like bears.
