George LeRoy Bowen, 85, of Calabash Drive, formerly of Bethlehem, PA, died Monday, March 30, 2009.
Born in Baltimore, MD, on December 25, 1923, he was a son of the late Edward Walter and Catherine Bowen. Mr. Bowen was a US Navy, WWII veteran having served as a Bombardier with the Navy Air Corps. in the African Theater. After the war he went to work with the Bethlehem Steel Corporation where he retired as VP in the Shipbuilding Division after thirty five years of service. He was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, and was an avid golfer, gardener and enjoyed woodworking and traveling.
Mr. Bowen and his wife Gladys moved to Carolina Shores in 1985 from Bethlehem, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1994 and a brother, Walter Bowen.
Survivors include three sons and their wives; a daughter and son-in-law; a sister and brother-in-law; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Friday, April 3, 2009 in the Chapel of Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home, Baltimore, MD. Interment will follow in the Druid Ridge Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
