Hugh served as a Staff Sergeant, Headquarters Company, 43rd Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.
He resided in Franklin County, Vermont prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Vermont National Guard on February 24, 1941, prior to the war, in Waterbury, Vermont. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Filling Station Attendant and also as Single, without dependents.
Hugh was "Killed In Action" in Luzon, Philippine Islands during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.
The term "Winged Victory Division" on his headstone was the nickname of the 43rd Infantry Division which was made up of National Guard units from Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont during the war.
