James served as a Staff Sergeant, 412nd Bomber Squadron, 95th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Windsor County, Vermont prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 10, 1942 in Rutland, Vermont. He was noted as being employed as a Electrician and also as Single, without dependents.

James was declared "Missing In Action" during the war and was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
