ARTICLE: "Profiles Do you know Mary Pierce? What makes Mary Pierce special? One thing is Mary is Richton Park's longest resident. Mary has lived in Richton Park for 72 years! She attended a one room school, housed on Sauk Trail, where Aurelio's Pizza is now located. But that's not all! Mary is our village clerk, a member of the Human Relations Commission and a Friend of the Library. She was a chairwoman of the village's 50th Anniversary of Incorporation, and just recently the village celebrated Mary Pierce Day. Mary was a teacher for 35 years before retiring and is still involved in the school [Steger] district. Pierce Park, was named in her honor, and each year Mary donates a tree to a village park, and it doesn't stop there. Mary is also a cancer survivor and sits on the local board of the American Cancer Society. There is no stopping Mary . . . she's a dynamo and an inspiration to all who know her. Mary is truly one of the "Riches" in the treasure chest of Richton Park!" Leaflet distributed in Richton Park: Riches of Richton Park; volume 1, issue no.1, dated July 1999. (MP was still serving as Village Clerk when she passed away in her home.)
MP loved going to the White Sox games both in Arizona for pre-season games and at the ballpark in Chicago. She enjoyed the harness racing at Balmoral Park in Crete, Illinois, also.

♣♣ She graduated (Class of 1941) from Thornton High School in Harvey, Illinois. She received her teaching degree(Class of 1944)from Chicago Teachers College(now Chicago State University).♣♣

The best way to describe Mary E. Pierce is to quote a poem that was written for her by Corky Adams in December 1974:
"Great is hidden in many disguises
Preceding persons of all sizes
The greatest of greats is usually small
Meaning short, not very tall
Great is being loved by all around
Yet managing to keep one's feet on the ground
Great is living a very full life
Even without being a mother or wife
Great are ceramic talents and liking Coors beer
Or sharing one's handiwork with those most dear
Great are barbeques on a summer night
Owners of dogs that bark and don't bite
Great the landscaper - gardener of sorts
Fearing not bugs or toads with warts
Great is the storyteller for young or old
Telling of past adventures bold
Great is a very scholastic teacher
Who knows just when to be a preacher
Great also is a personal friend
Seeing problems through to the end
Great is our Aunt, their Sister, your Friend
For even her greatness she will lend
Who in the world could that be
The very Majestic of Persons
A Marvelous People don't you agree
Great is Mighty Perfect
Great is simply our M.P"

♦♦MP's birth certificate lists December 3rd, 1922 as her birthday. This is in agreement with Irene (Hanes) Pierce's statements that at age seven MP no longer wanted to share a birthday with her younger sister, Nancy. It was agreed from then on, that MP would celebrate her birthday on December 4th. Over the years most of the family forgot that she was actually born on December 3rd. Family Bible records, Baptismal, Birth and School records are in agreement, Mary "MP" Elizabeth Pierce was born on December 3rd, 1922.♦♦
DEATH AGE: 89 years, 2 months 4(5) days
