WILLIAM BASSETT was born on December 17, 1702 in Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, the son of Nathan and Mary (Huckins) Bassett. William married ANNA MAYHEW about 1726. She was born in 1710 and died on September 25, 1780. Like others of the family he held prominent positions in the town and was a man of considerable wealth. His will dated June 22, 1779 was probated on January 2, 1783, and the inventory of his estate showed property to the value of 527-15-2.

William Bassett's gravestone was apparently intact in 1904 as it is recorded in Vital Records of Chilmark, Massachusetts to the Year 1850, published by the New-England Historic Genealogical Society (Boston, Mass. 1904) at page 85, but no cemetery is mentioned:

Chilmark Deaths:

Bassett, William, ch. Nathan and Mary, Dec. 24, 1782. [[h. Anna] in 80th y. GR].

GR = gravestone record

William is most likely buried in Abel's Hill Cemetery, also known as Chilmark Cemetery. William's parents are buried in the same cemetery.
