Airman First Class Howe was an aerial gunner
aboard U.S. Air Force B-36D 'Peacemaker'
#44-92071.

The pilot was attempting to land at Biggs Air
Force Base when they struck Franklin
Mountain, near El Paso, Texas.

Investigators believed the pilot mistook
nearby El Paso Municipal Airport for his
intended runway and the giant six propeller,
four jet engine powered bomber struck it's
wingtip into the mountainside in snowy, low
cloud cover weather conditions.

The crash killed all aboard.

The B-36 was on a flight from Carswell Air
Force Base, Fort Worth to Biggs.

The men killed were:

Lt. Col. Herman Gerick A/C Cmdr.
Maj. George C. Morford pilot
Maj. Douglas P. Miner Navigator
1st Lt. James M Harvey, Jr Flt. Eng.
1st Lt. Cary B Fant, Jr Flt. Eng.
T/Sgt. Royal Freeman Radio Op.
A2C Frank Silvestri gunner
T/Sgt. Dewey Taliaferro passenger

7th Bomb Wing, 492nd Bomb Squadron.
