Civil War Union Brigadier General, Arkansas Governor, US Senator. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in the 5th Kansas Cavalry and was commissioned a Colonel in March 1862. He served primarily in Missouri and Arkansas, fought at Wilson's Creek and after capture of Little Rock in September 1863, was assigned to command the post at Pine Bluff. In October 1863, he repulsed an attack by Confederate General J. S. Marmaduke and for his actions was promoted to Brigadier General of US Volunteers in August 1864. After the war, he remained in Arkansas and was elected Arkansas's Reconstruction Governor, serving 1868 to 1871. In 1871, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served to 1877. He was member of the Republican National Committee in 1889 and served as Ambassador to Mexico, 1897 to 1905.
