I was born in Indianapolis Indiana on September 29, 1915 and lived there until I was five years old. We came to Cedar Rapids Iowa in the fall of 1920. I went to kindergarten at Jackson School for a few months. We moved to Lincoln Heights in the spring of 1921. This was in the country with farms, acres of timber and creeks. We had ten acres of ground which we turned into a garden for a few years, and then into a Nursery and flower garden. We had our own cow, which was my job to milk in later years. We also had a couple of pigs each year, which were butchered for food.
I went to a country school named Rosedale, on old Lincoln Highway, thru eighth grade. Then I went to McKinley Jr. High School for ninth grade. I attended Washington High School which was on 4th Avenue and 4th Street for 10th, 11th, 12th grades. School was always easy for me, which I have some proof of. I had a one year College Scholarship at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. I had almost completed the year but had to give it up because of the depression. I had intended to be a mechanical engineer. Instead I became a poultry engineer, and saw to it that farm chickens became table chickens for eating. (Clendening Joke)
I went to work for Cold Stream Poultry Farm owned by H.E. Yearick, who I later discovered, had a wonderful daughter, who I later persuaded to marry me. She brought with her two wonderful little girls and they were and always will be mine.
My girls were joined by two brothers, Karl R. Clendening III and Gary Alan Clendening. I can say the girls and boys have made me very proud thru all the years. In September it will be sixty five years of the most wonderful fun times any one could have. It may not be quite so active but we are going to still make it fun.
