Charles Isham Browder married Penelope Winstead of Hopkins County KY in 1841. Charles Isham was a tobacco farmer in Hopkins County. They had eight children; one of these died in infancy and another died of Typhoid in 1855 at age 8. In 1857, Penelope died after the birth of their eighth child, Penelope. The daughter Penelope survived. Soon afterward, Charles Isham temporarily left his children with his parents and moved to Wise County TX after visiting his cousins in Dallas. One reference says he left because he thought that Hopkins County KY was a "sickly" country.
In 1860, he married a widow, Harriet Bradford Monroe, in the Sand Hill community south of Decatur in Wise County TX. Harriet had wanted to be married so that she could have children. So, Charles Isham went to KY and brought his seven, aged 4 to 17, to their home. Charles Isham and Harriet had two children, William Edward and Charles Isham, Jr., together. Charles Isham, Sr. is said to have helped found Sand Hill Methodist Church in Wise County TX. However, there are some time inconsistencies in when it was founded and when he came to TX. He ran a grist mill in the community during the Civil War. This mill was later somehow converted to a cotton gin. I have copies of documents wherein 1) he bought half of the real property of which Harriett owned the other half, presumably this had belonged to her first husband and her; 2) he bought a slave from Harriett; and 3) he mortgaged the slave back to Harriett. Their children were born northwest of Decatur, just across the Wise-Jack county line. Charles Isham died in 1869 and is buried there on what was in 1997 the H. H. Lewis Ranch; it is about 8 miles west of Chico TX. Some secondary sources indicate Charles Isham Browder was buried in Lloyd Cemetery. I have not been able to find a solid reference as to where Lloyd Cemetery is located, but have used the reference as a basis for the burial place. Neither, have I been able to determine the time (or other) relationship between the place south of Decatur and the one west of Chico.
