Jasper Newton was born 14 November 1842 in Tallapoosa, Talbot County, Georgia. He was the son of Stephen & Permelia Killingsworth Bowen.

He joined Company F, 50th Alabama Infantry commanded by Capt Clemmons. This unit later became the 22nd Alabama Infantry. He enlisted 31 August 1861 at Tuscaloosa, Alabama and was discharged 30 December 1861 for disability. He must have re-enlisted as he surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, in April 1865. Muster roll list JN Bowen as age 18, farmer, 6'1 1/2", with light hair and black eyes.

He married Margaret Permila Mathis. She was born 12 Mar 1846 in Alabama and died 12 April 1923 in Cottonwood, Texas, she was the daughter of Jordan Mathis.
