G.W. Hightower applied for an indigent soldier's pension on 5 July, 1909 at age 62, stating he served until the close of the Civil War and was in North Carolina in 1865. He was born in Pike County, Alabama, and had been a resident of Texas since 1875 and of McLennan County for two years. His occupation was farming. He served nearly two years in Company I of the 22nd Alabama Regiment in the Infantry as a Private. The State and County Assessor certified on 30 August 1909, that GW Hightower was charged on the land and personal property rolls with estate, real, personal and mixed at the assessed value of $275. On 24 February 1910, The War Department, Adjutant General's Office, reported that the Union prisoners of war records indicated Private GW Hightower, Company A 22nd Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army, enlisted on 10 March 1864. He surrendered near Greensboro, North Carolina on 27 April 1865, and was paroled at the same place on 1 May 1865. His pension (No. 18111) was approved on 28 February 1910.

S.H. Brooks age 85, stated on 27 July 1909 that he had known GW Hightower from childhood, and that he knew that he had performed the soldier duties as alleged. S.O. Floyd stated he was certain that GW Hightower served as a soldier until the close of the War.

The State of Texas paid $30 to Wiley Mansel on 8 April 1922, based on his Mortuary Warrant Account application following the death of pensioner GW Hightower on 15 March 1922. Wiley Mansel was the nephew of GW Hightower, who died in his home near the town of Normangee, Texas in Leon County. Undertaker TA Wolfe certified he was buried in the Clear Creek Cemetery in Leon County, Texas.
