s/o John Harris and Sophie Austin Harris

Born in Richmond, VA to John and Sophia Harris (Chesterfield County, VA). Attended grammar school in Richmond, VA and graduated from Wayland Academy (Union, VA) class of 1924.

Attended University of Michigan, received A.M. degree (1927) and Ph.D. (1938).

Married Gila B. Harris (Arkadelphia, Arkansas) on 11 September 1925. The marriage produeced three children: Jerome, Nelson H., and Swayzene.

Member of the Governor's Commission on Adult Education (NC).

He taught at Warren Country Training School, Wise, NC (1924-25), and at Wilberforce University, Wilberforce, OH (1927-29), and many years at Shaw University, eventually becoming President in the 1960s.
