A Veteran of the Navy, Leroy Imus became a Sterling Heights Police Officer on September 12, 1966. He was a devoted family man and well liked by his co-workers. Officer Imus was killed in the line of duty by a hit and run driver on the M-53 expressway north of 18 Mile Road during a traffic stop after 1:00 a.m. on December 2, 1971. Officer Imus was returning to his patrol car when a car driven by Maurice Regan swerved out of it's travel lane and struck both Officer Imus and his patrol car and fled. Mr. Regan eventually turned himself in and was charged with "Negligent Homicide and Failure to stop at the scene of an accident". Likely an intoxicated hit and run driver. Officer Imus had received a number of merit and departmental citations. He had also been named "Policeman of the Month" and had graduated from the Northwestern School of Staff and Command. He was thirty-two years old and was survived by his wife Nancy and four children, Sherry, Susan, Daniel and Patrick. Leroy and Nancy (King) married in Farmington, MI on December 13, 1961. Leroy had three brothers, Alan, Fred Jr. and Ron.
Imus Park was named after and dedicated to the memory of Leroy Imus. The park is on Dodge Park Road just north of 16 Mile Road.
