|Birth: ||1673, Germany|
|Death: ||Jan. 31, 1741|
Mathias lived in the village of Mitschdorf in the Bas-Rhin region of northeastern Alsace in what was the territory of the Counts of Hanau Lichtenberg, just about 12 miles south of Wissembourg which is on the German border. He worked as a blacksmith and also served as a lay assessor, magistrate, or lay court official. He arrived in Philadelphia with his family on 21 Sep 1731.
There were 6 young men (two of whom had wives and children) who traveled with him and are believed to be his sons. Parish records and his will uphold that at 3 of them were his sons. Some believe that the Maria Barbara Nehs, age 60, who arrived with them was his first wife.
Mathias was married a second time on 28 Nov 1733 to Anna Barbara Hoerdter at Skippack, Montgomery, PA. He had two more sons with his second wife.
Children: Jacob, Michael, Mathias Jr, Johann, Dewald, and Hans Georg were the six who immigrated with Mathias. John Henry and Johan Owldrick (or Ulrich) are the two from his second marriage.
Mathias died in early February 1741 or 1742. His will was probated on 13 Feb 1741 or 1742.
