Nicholas was born as Johann Nickel to Michael Trarbach and Maria Elizabeth Hermann. He was born in Wahlenau, Germany, and christened at Sohren Parish on August 27, 1741. He was named after Johann Nickel Sieber of Horbruch, who was a sponsor at his christening. At age ten, Nicholas came with his parents to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and landed on September 9, 1751; they then relocated to York County. Nicholas' surname in Pennsylvania became Drorbach. In about 1764, Nicholas wed Anna Elizabeth, surname unknown, in York County, Pennsylvania and had:

3) Elizabeth Margaret, C: 10 Nov 1769
4) Catherine in 1773
5) Anna Marie in 1775
6) Mary (Montelany) in 1777

In 1779, Nicholas and brother William moved to Rockingham County, Virginia and their surname became Trobaugh. William and Nicholas bought land from Andrew Hudlow and there Nicholas had:
7) Elizabeth on 16 Oct 1779
8) George in 1780
9) Henry on 24 May 1782
10) Margaret on 9 Oct 1784

On September 9, 1786, Nicholas bought 370 acres of land on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River at Mount Solon. There he had:

12) Jacob in 1791
13) Daniel in 1793

Nicholas attended Drohrbach's (Emanuel) Church, which was built in 1801. Nicholas sold his land on October 24, 1804 and moved to Greeneville, Tennessee. On April 22, 1805, he bought 249 acres of land adjacent to the city of Greeneville. Nicholas' son Henry wed Sarah Brown on December 25, 1805 and his daughter Margaret wed Sarah's brother George Brown on August 18, 1807. In 1811, Henry and sister Margaret left for Harrison County, Indiana. Nicholas died in 1818 and thought to be buried on his land. His wife died in 1831.
