VICTOR B. STORY, SR., 88, of Lake Wales, died of heart failure at Lake Wales Medical Center on Monday, March 27, 2006.

Born Jan. 31, 1918, in Kissimmee to Lyles and Ethel Story, he moved to Winter Haven at the age 6 lived in Polk County for the remainder of his life.

He attended the University of Florida and Florida Southern College. He served as a captain in Army Air Force in 1941 to 1945 as a pilot and flew and more than 50 missions, which made him an Ace. He flew Light Attack Bombers in North Africa and fought in the Battle of El Alamein in North Africa. After completion of his combat missions, he flew/delivered new planes all over the world. He was awarded service Unit Citations and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was the owner of Story Grove Services Inc., which he began in 1945 with money he had saved during his service time, and with his family (son and grandsons) he continued to build the company. Today they own and manage 5,000 acres of citrus in Polk and Hardee counties.

He was a member of the Lake Wales Country Club, Florida Citrus Mutual, and the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

He met and married Fredia Pagel in 1944. She was a flight nurse in the war, which is where they met. They had two sons, Victor Story Jr. and Lyles "Terry" Story.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Fredia Story.

Along with his two sons, he is survived by his wife, Betty Story; a sister Etheleen Oster; two stepsons, H.A. Ingley III and Roger Ingley; 17 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Lake Wales. Visitation with the family will take place immediately following the funeral at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Lake Wales Care Center, 140 East Polk Ave., Lake Wales. Interment will be private.
