CITRUS INDUSTRY MATRIARCH DIES OF CANCER
By JOHN DAVIS JR.

WINTER HAVEN - A matriarch of Florida's citrus trade died Sunday from cancer, and representatives of the business expressed their condolences.

Nancy Gurnett Hardy, 70, a native of Sarasota, was known to many inside the Sunshine State's citrus network.

Whether it was through her role as manager of her father's newsletter, The Florida Citrus Reporter, as senior writer for Citrus Industry magazine, or through her coverage of citrus for The Produce News, her name was known far and wide in print among growers, harvesters and producers, said those in the citrus business Monday.

"That was her newsletter," explained Casey Pace, spokeswoman for Florida Citrus Mutual. "She was a real cornerstone of the industry. From a communications standpoint, she was an integral part."

Her critical role in the field of mass communications was what won her Florida's "Woman of the Year in Agriculture" in 1998, "News Person of the Year" from the Florida Farm Bureau Federation in 1996 and also got her inducted into Florida's Citrus Hall of Fame in 2002.

The awards followed in her father's tradition as Jack Gurnett was the first journalist to be inducted into the hall years beforehand. Her induction made them the first father-daughter duo in the Hall of Fame's history.

Hardy is survived by one son, John Hardy, of Florence, S.C.; one daughter, Beth Hardy, of St. Petersburg; one sister, Jacqueline Smith, of Florence, S.C.; one grandson; and many loving friends, according to family.

Visitation will take place Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home in Winter Haven. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. at Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church.

The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the William Hardy Scholarship at Florida Southern College.
