Alice was the daughter of Thomas Owen and Laura Virginia Anderson SMITH. She was DAR through her father's maternal line, the Owen family of Montgomery County, Maryland; but, made an error in choosing the correct antecedant to show same. Appears she made a similar mistake in claiming a patriot on her mother's side of the family. Illinois marriage and census records show she married first, Illinois Civil War veteran: William Slocum. Just three years later no trace of William can be found, by this author [seems he ran off to Kansas with a 'lady' of ill-repute and MORE money]. Alice then went to Washington D.C. and began to distinguish herself in a career as a clerk in the Office of Indian Affairs. Here, evidently, she met and married a Dr. F.B. Culver, 1873. He had, in 1861, in Kansas, been part of a treaty with the Arappahoe and Cherokee. On 15 June 1879, F.B. Culver passed away; and so, Alice is found listed as a widow in the 1880 census. Her next husband was William P. White, and they married on 17 March 1886 in Washington, D.C. Alas, in 1900 she again is listed as a widow. In 1905 she married Civil War Veteran, Lawyer, Representative to Congress, Erastus J. Turner. They worked yet awhile in Washington, D.C.; in 1916, they retired to Seattle, Washington. After 1920, thhey removed to Los Angeles, California, where they spent the rest of their lives. This last marriage lasted 28 years. Alice never had any children, that lived; she had a stillborn infant in 1878; she did have at least one step-son.
