Sprague, in his "Annals", states that James Smith was born of humble parentage in the southern part of Virginia. He began his career as a Methodist Episcopal minister in 1798, for a time that was in Camden, North Carolina. From 1803 until 1818 he preached throughout the Baltimore Conference. He preached @ Union Church in Philadelphia, 1818; and in 1819-1820 @ St. George's in Philadelphia. Later his work was divided between Pennsylvania and Maryland. He was much respected. The Hon. Philemon B. Hopper wrote: " ...his company was sought by the intelligent of all denominations. Such was his eloquence that, on Sabbath mornings, the church would be filled to overflowing..."
James married Anne (Nancy) Owen, June 5, 1810. Most of their children and grandchildren are being chronicled @ the 'find-a-grave' site. Among them, sons: Edward Owen Smith I, Col. Gustavus Adolphus Smith, Gentleman Farmer and Banker Thomas Owen Smith. Anne died before James.... both were still very young.
Entries in the Prather family Bible from Decatur, Illinois, made by James and Anne's eldest issue, a daughter named Rachel, tell us that James Smith's father was James Sr.; his wife was Lucy.
