James Freeman Harris, 76, of Chattanooga, TN died Friday, June 3, 2011, of natural causes.
He was a native of Chattanooga, TN and a graduate of McCallie School and the University of Chattanooga.
Jim was a son of Freeman R. and Marjorie Williams Harris, of Chattanooga, TN and a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Harris, of Chattanooga, TN and Mr. and Mrs. W.I. Williams, of Graysville, TN. In addition to these forebears, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Meg Harris Gilbreath, and by his sister, Peggy Harris Mulligan.
Survivors near relatives are his daughter, Susan Harris Gilbreath; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas A. and Sally H. Harris; and nephews, Fred M. Milligan Jr., Freeman H. Milligan, T. Alan Harris; Timothy F. Harris and William H. Harris. Also surviving Jim are a number of cousins, great-nephews and nieces, and life-long friends.
Jim was baptized at Central Presbyterian Church, and he remained a member there until the church was dissolved. During his adult years, Jim was partially incapacitated by persistent illness. But his natural friendliness, good will kindness, and humor shone through, and he was a popular figure with many whose lives he brightened. Numerous expressions of fond affection for Jim have comforted the family in recent days.
We rely upon the promises of God in Jesus Christ for Jims healing and wholeness and joy in the realm of his Heavenly Father, with his loved ones who have gone before.
In his last days, Jim was provided exceptional compassionate care from staffs at Erlanger Hospital, Life Care Center of Red Bank, TN, and Hospice of Chattanooga, TN. The many kindnesses extended have been remarkable and are deeply appreciated.
Family and friends will gather for a graveside service to be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at Forest Hills Cemetery with Dr. William Dudley and the Rev. Margaret Ferguson officiating.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
