               Death of John M. Martin.

On Saturday morning last, Uncle John Martin, as he was popularly called, breathed his last at his home in Crow Wing township, the cause of his death being enlargement of the spleen. He was 68 years of age at the time of his death, and had lived in this county for over 18 years, coming here in 1871 from Iowa. Mr. Martin lived in the city for several years after his arrival here and was engaged in business. About ten years ago he moved to his farm in Crow Wing township, where he has since lived. He faithfully served the people of the county as commissioner for 15 years, only retiring from the board last January. He was a conscientious and faithful official, an honest upright citizen, and a loving husband and father, and his death will be keenly felt by the people of this community. He leaves a wife and two children, both grown, to mourn his loss. Wm. Martin, his son, was at one time engaged in business here, and his daughter, Mrs. W. L. Jack, now resides in this city. Mr. Martin in recent years has been a well-to-do farmer, his farm in Crow Wing being one of the most improved and best in the county. His remains were brought to this city and interred in Evergreen cemetery on Sunday, Rev. M. D. Everest conducting the funeral ceremonies. (Brainerd Dispatch, 05 April 1889, p. 4, c. 5)

      D. S. Martin, a brother of the late J. M. Martin, and E. Odell, father of Mrs. Martin, arrived in this city last Sunday evening from Iowa Falls, Iowa, to attend the funeral of Mr. Martin, which occurred only a few hours before. As the brothers had not seen each other for 20 years Mr. Martin was much disappointed, but had the body taken up the next day that he might see the features of his dead brother. (Brainerd Dispatch, 12 April 1889, p. 4, c. 4)
