U.S. Veteran Harvey C. Rieger of Warren, Michigan, entered eternal life on Friday, June 4, 2010 at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Macomb Center in Warren. He was 87 years old. He was born on September 26, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late Ludwig "Louie" and the late Meta (nee: Karschnick) Rieger.
With thanks and praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Harvey for his service to our country during World War II. A decorated veteran, he was a proud patriot and valiant soldier of the United States Army whose overseas efforts played a role in preserving the freedoms we enjoy today. Following his service and return stateside, Harvey became avidly involved with the Fraternal Order of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, an association and brotherhood that he enjoyed immensely and visited weekly. Another veteran organization he was proud to be a member of was the Military Order of the Cooties. Not only was Harvey a lifetime member of both Fraternal Orders, but he was honored to hold the office of Commander in both organizations as well.
Harvey was employed with the Ford Motor Company, from where he retired after years of dedicated service. Following his retirement, he was afforded even more time to spend with his buddies at the various VFW posts in the area, which was undoubtedly one of the biggest passions in his life. Also, whether it was at one of the posts or in the comfort of his chair at home, Harvey was a big-time fan of the Detroit Tigers. As recent as last Thursday, he mustered the strength to take in a game with his son at the hospital. Even amidst his physical challenges, his "boys of summer" still needed that Harvey-style rooting on and support.
He was the loving husband of Doris (nee: Dettloff). Dear father of James (Jean), John (Claudia), and Janet (Tom) Kliza. Proud grandfather of Jamie, James (Cynthia), Joseph, and Jackie. He was predeceased by sisters, Ruth Kiley and Lucille Klatzke, and by his first wife, Lorraine.
