Officer Benavides was flying solo when his plane went down in the desert near Hwy 78 and Split Mountain Road in Imperial County.
At 9:30 a.m. Friday, Benavides was flying a Cessna 206 from Brawley to the Ocotillo area, on the San Diego-Imperial county line, when the CHP's communication center in El Centro lost radio contact
Benavides was a 13-year veteran of the California Highway Patrol and was assigned to the Border Division Thermal Air Operations Unit since July, 2006. The unit uses small aircraft to monitor freeways and radio information about speeders on freeways in Riverside, Imperial and San Diego counties.
Benavides is survived by his wife, Megan and daughter Madeline, 9
Daniel Nava Benavides was born on November 27, 1970, in Monterrey, Mexico. Immediately following his birth, his family returned to San Jose, Calif. where he spent his childhood. He graduated from Andrew P. Hill High School in 1989. Daniel joined the California Highway Patrol on September 9, 1996. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the Monterey Area, where he spent several years. Daniel worked in the San Jose, San Diego and Oceanside Area offices before transferring to Thermal Air Operations to pursue his dream of being a CHP pilot. He spent the last five years of his career doing what he loved to do. Dan was loved for his quick wit, sense of humor and unique photo editing skills. He loved to fly airplanes, was a certified scuba diver, and loved off-road 4-wheeling and camping with his family and friends. Dan was a devoted husband, proud father, loving son, and a faithful friend. He is survived by his wife, Megan; his daughter, Madeline; his mother, Consuelo Hilton; and his father, Forrest Hilton. Dan will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the entire CHP family. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday May 14, 2010 at New Venture Christian Fellowship, 4000 Mystra Way, Oceanside, CA 92056.
